AZIMGANJ, June 11, 2025 – Savio Bhavan in Azimganj, Murshidabad, radiated hope and purpose as it hosted the initiation ceremony for sixteen young men embarking on their pre-novitiate journey toward Salesian religious life. Hailing from Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, these aspirants began their formative path under the theme “Be Human, Be Holy,” a call to grow in both humanity and holiness.

The ceremony, held on June 11, was led by Fr. Sunil Kerketta, Vice Provincial of the Kolkata Province, accompanied by Fr. Biswajit Mondal, Vice Rector of Savio Bhavan, and Fr. Tony. A four-day orientation program, animated by Fr. Sunil, prepared the pre-novices spiritually and emotionally for the year ahead, fostering reflection and commitment to their vocational calling.

The event culminated in a solemn Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Fr. Sunil and concelebrated by Fr. Biswajit and Fr. Tony. The Mass invoked God’s grace and blessings, setting a sacred tone for the pre-novices’ journey. The diverse group, representing a mosaic of cultures, expressed enthusiasm and dedication, ready to embrace the challenges of community life, intellectual formation, and spiritual growth at Savio Bhavan, a historic formation house established in 1987.

Located on the banks of the Bhagirathi River, Savio Bhavan has long been a nurturing ground for Salesian vocations, having produced numerous priests and brothers over its 38-year history. The initiation marks a new chapter for these young men, who are poised to carry forward the Salesian mission of serving youth and glorifying God, inspired by the legacy of Don Bosco.

Sonada, 9 May 2025 -  Fr. Roshan Kullu SDB, the Provincial Delegate for Mission Animation, led a very informative and interactive session on Salesian Missionary life at Salesian College Sonada on 9th May 2025.  The evening session was a response to the desire of the congregation to create missionary enthusiasm among those in post novitiate formation.   

The session began with the introductory words by Fr. Johny Nedungatt, the Rector and offering of khada to the resource person by Fr. Clement Lakra, the dean of studies. Thereafter, the resource person led the remainder of the session, presenting the mind of the congregation regarding Salesian Mission. He dealt with various aspects of the theme  emphasizing the  missionary vocation of a Salesian, Don Bosco’s missionary spirit, the profile of a Salesian missionary today, and the stages of the discernment of the Salesian missionary vocation.  He substantiated the above aspects of Missionary vocation with examples drawn from his personal experience.

The lively discussion that ensued focused on the glaring absence of the fruits such animation and missionary seminars bear in the province.  A question from the participants that made everyone pause and reflect was: how many missionary ad gentes have these animations and seminars brought forth in these past years? 

Another noteworthy intervention was the need to foster the missionary vocation that takes shape in the heart of a Salesian.  Every Salesian needs to fan into a flame that spark of the desire to be a missionary ad gentes which the Lord kindles in the heart of a Salesian. 

Some of the young Salesians present at the session spontaneously volunteered to be sent as missionaries ad gentes. Fr. Roshan  concluded the session and discussion with the words, “Make your life a mission and not an intermission.”

Turin,  February 16 – The 29th General Chapter (CG29) of the Salesians of Don Bosco officially commenced on February 16 at the historic Valdocco Mother House, with the Salesian Province of Kolkata proudly represented by three delegates: Fr. Joseph Pauria, Provincial; Fr. Sunil Kerketta, Vice Provincial; and Fr. Tomy Augustine, Delegate and Rector of Salesian College Autonomous, Siliguri. The opening ceremony, led by Fr. Alphonse Owoudou, Chapter Moderator, marked the gathering of 230 provincials and delegates from across the globe, united under the theme, “Passionate about Jesus Christ, dedicated to the young.” The event underscored the Salesians’ commitment to revitalizing Don Bosco’s charism and addressing the pressing challenges faced by youth and marginalized communities worldwide.

Fr. Stefano Martoglio, President of the Chapter, set the tone for the assembly by emphasizing the prophetic role of the Salesians in today’s world. “We must allow ourselves to be shaken by the cries of the poor and respond with both personal and institutional actions,” he urged, echoing Pope Francis’ call for a Church that is both compassionate and courageous. Cardinal Roberto Repole, Archbishop of Turin, reinforced this message during the Eucharistic celebration at the Basilica of Mary Help of Christians, reminding the delegates that their mission is not merely organizational but deeply spiritual—to bring Christ’s gaze to a world in need of justice and hope. The Mayor of Turin, Stefano Lo Russo, also extended his greetings, expressing hope that the Chapter’s deliberations would yield meaningful insights for both the Salesian mission and broader societal challenges.

The Salesian Province of Kolkata’s delegates bring a wealth of experience and dedication to the Chapter. Fr. Joseph Pauria, as Provincial, has been instrumental in guiding the province’s efforts in education, youth ministry, and social outreach. Fr. Sunil Kerketta, Vice Provincial, has focused on empowering marginalized communities, while Fr. Tomy Augustine, with his leadership at Salesian College Siliguri, has championed holistic education and innovation. Their participation reflects the province’s commitment to the global Salesian mission and its readiness to contribute to the Chapter’s goal of “redesigning the Congregation at all levels.” As CG29 unfolds, the Kolkata delegates join their global counterparts in discerning pathways to preserve the flame of Don Bosco’s charism and ensure a brighter future for the young.

Kolkata, January 29 – The Salesian family and the Catholic community mourn the passing of Father Abraham PJ, who breathed his last on January 29, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on June 13, 1934, in Karunapuram, Kerala, to Joseph and Elizabeth, Father Abraham’s life was a testament to unwavering faith, humility, and dedication to the Salesian mission. Baptized at St. Ephraim’s Parish, he felt the call to religious life early, entering the Salesian Seminary at Tiruchy at the age of eight. His journey of formation took him to Salesian College, Sonada, and Shillong, where he professed his first vows as a Salesian brother on May 24, 1956. Over the next four decades, he served as a brother, excelling in administrative roles, before fulfilling his lifelong dream of priesthood in 1996.

Father Abraham’s early years as a Salesian brother were marked by his exceptional service in financial administration and support. He served as the manager of the Catholic Orphan Press in Kolkata, bursar at Don Bosco Liluah and Don Bosco Tangra, and procurator for the Northeast missions. His generosity and efficiency were instrumental in supporting missionaries, facilitating overseas travel, and handling customs clearance. Despite his administrative responsibilities, he nurtured a deep spiritual life, often spending hours before the Blessed Sacrament. In 1993, at the age of 59, he expressed his long-cherished desire to become a priest, a dream he had held since his youth. After careful discernment and formation, he was ordained a priest on April 10, 1996, at Bandel Basilica by Bishop Thomas Menamparampil, SDB. His ordination was the culmination of 41 years of faithful service as a brother.

As a priest, Father Abraham continued to serve with humility and dedication. He was known for his availability as a confessor, his love for the Latin language, and his ability to bring joy to those around him. His cheerful presence, Salesian humor, and deep devotion to the Eucharist left a lasting impression on everyone he met. In his later years, he ministered in various communities, including Liluah, Mirpara, Auxilium Parish, Siliguri, and the Provincial House. Even in his final days, he remained a man of prayer and service. His last words, “Buonanotte” (Italian for “goodnight”), spoken to visitors at Park Clinic, encapsulated his warmth and faith. Father Abraham’s life reflected the teachings of Christ, emphasizing resurrection, eternal life, and the transformative power of baptism. His legacy of love, service, and humility continues to inspire the Salesian family and all who knew him. May he rest in the joy of the Resurrection.

Kolkata, January 24:  The Salesian Family in South Bengal came together to celebrate Salesian Family Day on January 23, 2025, reaffirming their commitment to accompanying young people on their journey of faith.

The event, attended by members of various Salesian Family groups, including Salesian Fathers and Brothers, Salesian Cooperators, ADMA, Past Pupils, SMI Sisters, FMA Sisters, and Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians, began with the 2025 Jubilee Anthem.

Fr. Stefano Martoglio, Vicar of the Rector Major, presented the 2025 Strenna, "Anchored in Hope, Pilgrims with Young People," which was followed by group discussions. Each group shared their insights on supporting young people, with Salesian Cooperators emphasizing the need to address youth challenges like depression through counseling and prayer.

ADMA committed to being "angels of hope" for the young, while Past Pupils highlighted initiatives to bring hope to restless youth through counseling, sports, music, and family-strengthening activities. SMI Sisters pledged to support young people by nurturing their talents and deepening their faith.

The day also featured a well-animated liturgy, including the Holy Eucharist, and a lively family circle event organized by the Salesian Cooperators, which included a spirited game of housie.

Siliguri, January 23: The Salesian Family in North Bengal came together to celebrate Salesian Family Day 2025 at the Salesian College Siliguri Campus, strengthening bonds and reaffirming their commitment to serving the young.

The event, attended by 69 participants from various Salesian Family groups, including Salesians, Cooperators, FMA Sisters, MSMHC Sisters, and SMI Sisters, was a vibrant celebration of hope and unity.

Fr. Vice-Provincial animated the event, reflecting on the themes of Jubilee 2025: Pilgrims of Hope and Strenna 2025: Anchored in Hope, Pilgrims with Young People.

A special highlight was the Holy Mass, presided over by Fr. Babu Joseph, who preached an inspiring homily on Christian Education and the Role of Christian Youth in Nation Building.

The celebration concluded with a delicious meal, prepared by Fr. Jagjivan Tirkey and his team, reflecting the warm hospitality of the Salesian community.

The event was a testament to the Salesian Family's commitment to journeying together as Pilgrims of Hope, walking alongside the young and anchored in faith and hope.
